Clear Spring, MD – It is with the heaviest of hearts that the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company (CSVFC) announces the untimely passing of one of its own, Firefighter Austin Leatherman.
At just 18 years old, Austin’s life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a grieving fire company, a devastated family, and a community grappling with the loss of a dedicated young man whose future held so much promise.
Austin Leatherman was more than a firefighter—he was a shining example of commitment, courage, and compassion. His journey with the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company began early.
At the tender age of 13, he joined as a Junior Firefighter, eager to serve his community and learn the skills needed to become a first responder. From the moment he walked through the firehouse doors, it was clear to everyone that Austin had found his calling.
At 16, he transitioned into the role of probationary firefighter. He took on this responsibility with the same determination and heart he had shown as a Junior Firefighter. Austin’s enthusiasm for the fire service was contagious.
He approached every training session, drill, and call with a seriousness well beyond his years. His fellow firefighters admired his work ethic, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn.
Before his passing, Austin was actively working toward completing his Firefighter 1 certification and obtaining his EMT qualification—goals he pursued with great pride and perseverance.
He had dreams of dedicating his life to serving others, not just as a volunteer, but potentially as a career firefighter or emergency medical technician. He was well on his way, driven by a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of those around him.
The Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company and the broader emergency services community are mourning a tremendous loss. “Austin was like a little brother to many of us,” said one fellow firefighter. “He had such a big heart and was always ready to help. We all saw in him the kind of firefighter and man we strive to be.”
While the loss of someone so young and full of potential is heartbreaking, Austin’s impact in his short time with the fire company is undeniable. He inspired those around him with his unwavering dedication and his gentle, respectful nature. His presence in the station and on calls was always marked by kindness, humility, and an eagerness to serve.
The Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company has asked the public to keep the Leatherman family in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
