The Springfield Public Schools community is mourning the loss of EJ Rotherham, a dedicated educator and beloved assistant principal at Agnes Stewart Middle School (ASMS), who passed away peacefully in his sleep over Memorial Day weekend. EJ Rotherham was more than an administrator—he was a mentor, a beacon of positivity, and a cornerstone of the Agnes Stewart school community. One of the founding staff members when the school opened its doors in 1998, EJ helped shape the school’s culture and ethos over a remarkable career spanning more than two decades. His name became synonymous with ASMS, not only because of his tenure but because of the profound care and tireless energy he brought to the role every single day.
Known for his silly humor, infectious laugh, and larger-than-life spirit, EJ had the rare ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. Whether walking the hallways with his signature smile or supporting a student through a tough day, his presence radiated encouragement and warmth.
