SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

EJ Rotherham was more than an administrator—he was a mentor, a beacon of positivity, and a cornerstone of the Agnes Stewart school community. One of the founding staff members when the school opened its doors in 1998, EJ helped shape the school’s culture and ethos over a remarkable career spanning more than two decades. His name became synonymous with ASMS, not only because of his tenure but because of the profound care and tireless energy he brought to the role every single day.

Known for his silly humor, infectious laugh, and larger-than-life spirit, EJ had the rare ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. Whether walking the hallways with his signature smile or supporting a student through a tough day, his presence radiated encouragement and warmth. Generations of students remember him as someone who always had their back, who knew their names, and who cared deeply about their growth—not just as learners, but as people.

“EJ was the foundation and heart of Agnes Stewart Middle School,” said Principal Kevin Wright. “He brought his iconic energy, smile, and laugh to every task and made everyone feel welcome. He was the first to arrive, the last to leave, and the one you could always count on to bring joy and humanity into every interaction.”

His colleagues speak of a man who led by example, never hesitating to roll up his sleeves to support a student, help a teacher, or lend a listening ear. His approach to leadership was grounded in compassion and equity, always prioritizing what was best for students. Many staff members credit EJ with mentoring them through the most formative years of their careers, instilling values of patience, resilience, and unwavering kindness.

Springfield Public Schools have mobilized support in the wake of this tragic loss. Beginning immediately, counselors, school psychologists, and therapy animals will be available at Agnes Stewart Middle School to help students and staff process their grief and honor EJ’s life.

Outside of school, EJ was a dedicated family man and community member who relished time with loved ones, enjoyed a good laugh, and approached life with heart and humility. Though private about his personal life, those close to him knew a man who deeply loved his family, cherished connection, and found fulfillment in uplifting others.

As news of his passing spreads throughout the community, tributes have poured in from students past and present, fellow educators, and local leaders who recognize the lasting legacy EJ leaves behind. His influence extends far beyond the classroom—into the homes, memories, and lives of thousands who were fortunate enough to know him.
