A devastating tragedy unfolded in Franklin, Massachusetts, on Saturday evening when a suspected drunk driving crash claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl and left multiple family members injured.
The young child, who had been riding with her parents and brother on Grove Street, died after their sedan collided with a pickup truck just before 6:30 p.m. According to law enforcement sources, the little girl was rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The heartbreaking incident has shaken the local community to its core. The girl’s mother and brother sustained serious injuries in the crash and remain hospitalized.
The father, who had been driving the vehicle, was also treated for injuries but has since been released from the hospital. The family had reportedly just left a local soccer field before the crash occurred.
At the center of the investigation is 21-year-old James Blanchard of Franklin, who was identified as the driver of the pickup truck involved in the collision.
Blanchard was arrested at the scene and is facing multiple charges, including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol and with negligence, three counts of OUI causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle, and a marked lanes violation.
Blanchard is currently being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at Wrentham District Court. The serious charges reflect the severity of the crash and the devastating consequences of impaired driving.
As the legal process begins, the Franklin community is mourning the loss of a young life. Throughout the day on Sunday, people visited the crash site to leave flowers, teddy bears, and notes of condolence. The sidewalk became a growing memorial, a visual testament to a grief shared by neighbors, strangers, and fellow parents alike.
Lisa and David Oxford, residents of Franklin, stopped by the site to pay their respects. “Oh, it’s heartbreaking because we know how full of promise children are,” Lisa said through tears. “The poor girl never got the chance to start her life.”
Another visitor, Rick Talamini, said he felt compelled to do something — anything — to honor the girl. “It’s just tragic, you know. It’s too bad the little girl had to die,” he said, standing near a small cluster of stuffed animals.
Stacy Smith, who works with children, said she was deeply affected upon hearing the news. “I cried because I work with kids, and hearing that a little girl passed away so tragically, it broke my heart — absolutely shattered my heart,” she said.

Somebody lost their life. Parents aren’t going to get to see their child grow up because of what happened.”
